Today Luke went to pre-school, he loves it. When I picked him up I opened his back pack and examined his non-eaten lunch (as I always do) I tell you that kid is just like his Dad, he just doesn't care all that much about food. Lily and I on the other hand...we love food, maybe a little too much, but anyway. I gave Lily his un-eaten sandwich for her lunch and drove home.
When we pulled in to the driveway luke decided that he wanted to push the button to open the garage door and he also wanted to help me drive the car (you let the kid do something once and suddenly they want to be an under age driver everyday) I said no and I did the honors myself, I pull in shut the door and then the drama begins.
Luke is screaming
"No Mommy don't touch me, nooooo STOP IT I want to push the button" as I am trying to unbuckle him. Then Lily is screaming crying
"No Mommy not time for a sleepie I want to go to pre-school" (we go through this every week and every week I tell her that when she is 4 she can go...well that's just not good enough)
So Luke is screaming and Lily is bawling and I am wondering how things can change so rapidly in a mere 45 seconds.
Well then Lily decides that instead of being a problem she is going to be a mother
"uh oh Mom, Nuke's in big trouble huh Mom"
"Nuke we don't scream...tiiiime OUT"
"Nuke's in time out huh Mom."
me-"Lily don't worry about Luke"
Luke- "Stop it Mommmmmmmy"
(I can't win)
So I leave him in the van jumping up and down so fiercely that the van is rocking and I take Lily upstairs. Meanwhile she remembers that she is going to have a nap and the whining and begging resumes.
So I make her a little something to eat (the hand me down sandwich ended up on the floor of the van)
she is distracted cause like I said, the girl likes food.
Then Luke enters the picture again, this time he has the crazy look in his eyes and Lily's cute little red boot hits me in the back, then he leaves again
the next thing I see is his diego back pack flying past me, followed by a pair of socks. I turn around and look at him with all the furry I can muster and he screams on the top of his lungs and run's away.
This goes on for a few minutes (him screaming and me ignoring him)
I take Lily up and lay her down and come back to see Luke laying in the fetal position on the floor on the living room. I ask him if he wants an apple and he screams.
So I walk into the kitchen and cut up an apple and slyly put it on the floor of the living room, Kind of like you would with a dog or a cat (or a rabid animal that you don't want to bite you).
So I laid the bait and waited to see if the little demon would take it. When he thought I wasn't looking he slyly went over and started nibbling on the apple. I kid you not one minute later he comes up to me and says
"sorry mommy, come sit with me" And then we had a nice little 4 year old snuggle on the couch.
Moral of the story... Make sure your children are fed before you decide whether or not you are going to lock them in the cellar and throw away the key! It may be the hunger monster throwing shoes at you and not your oh so sweet (haha) 4 year old son

this is priceless. I love to hear you being a mom in action. I could clearly see the whole thing playing out. That pic of Luke is honestly to die for.
after reading your post I felt like I had just tuned into a "Supernanny" episode, you know the part they show footage before the intervention, unlike in my held together, non-dramatic, quiet and sweet, three little boy household. I often wonder what Moms mean when they ask me how I do it, having such well mannered and behaving, polite children. You actually had a shoe thrown at you, by your kid? Who is in control over there anyways, I can call for some help. But while your thereapist is there, tell her about your good friend in Oregon who can appreciate some good advice and desperately needs some self help with dealing with her four-year old. I love honesty Jacklyn, you are not alone, we all have our priceless days.:)ha ha ha
I laughed so hard...i think this story happens every week at our house too. Good call with the apple maneuver.
I don't think it was hunger...he just misses me. Next time that happens bring him straight to Nancy's house!! (Although, you know if you bring him over you have to take one of mine with you back to your house. Huh, which one should it be.....?
Jacklyn, that is so funny. I can just picture it. My favorite is Luke throwing things at you!
jack - such a cute pict! those kiddies are sooo sweet! oh, and I am lovin the old school Claud pict too! Lookin good! you have the best posts - such fun to keep up with you! oh yeah, one more thing - I am certainly not team obama. but thats another story..... :). anyhow - hope all is well!
haha! Oh Jacklyn. You are, indeed, a mom. This is so funny to me!
Hey...thanks for the tip! I will totally give it a try! BTW...you're not stalking..we had you over for the 4th of July a couple years ago! Your family is so cute! Thanks again!
What do you do when the hungry monster is your husband? Seriously.
I so agree with the hungry monster theory!!! I wish I would have thought a bit more about when raising hungry boys and girls. thanks Jack. love ya!! the pictures are amazing and I want to hug them both.
Sure enjoyed the update on your blog Jacklyn. Just for the record, I thought that your hair was cute both when it was curly, and when it was short in grade nine. I especially like the pictures of Lily with her two birthday cakes. Also, I'm sure that Luke was just showing off his throwing arm. Also, your phonetically correct rendition makes perfect sense, but the word is, heinous. Love Dad
you are so patient! every week, I remind him to eat his lunch and he kind of nibbles on his food and watches the other kids. i guess he's just not that hungry when there's so much going on around him!
